Working is a collaborative brand and consultancy bringing together the design perspectives of William Kroll, founder of Tender Co., and Robert Newman, head of design for Massimo Osti Studio.
Working together from our studios in Glasgow, Scotland and Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Working reflects our individual approaches to design and production and allows us to interrogate each other’s understanding of fabrics, art and design history, uniform constructions and an expanded notion of workwear. The project name is made up of the initials WK and RN and garments are produced in England and Japan.

This first collection, Book 1, is a cross-season uniform built around
overdyed technical Italian cotton, rinsed Japanese denim, and open
cotton mesh. Alongside the main apparel collection, jeans have
been developed with Edwin Japan’s experimental ‘SKEWed’ production
facility, combining their in-house weaving and sewing expertise
with Working’s experimental design approach.
Key to the mainline offering is our ‘loft’ construction, a sandwich
of three cloths, which when garment dyed comes alive, each layer
taking the dye and shrinking differently, to produce a tactile, characterful
and versatile fabric.
All Working products our finished with our ’sticker’ heat sealed
branding, referencing industrial laundry tagging and office stationary,
and the ‘swatch’ tab, pinked along the bottom edge from the
same fabric as the garment, an echo of how new fabrics are presented
to clothing designers at trade shows and fabric mills.
