Tell Tale Compasses 18- 19th century, danemark- mostly made by Iver Jensen i København

These very beautiful specimens are so-called Tell Tale Compasses or also called Overhead, Hanging or Crown Compasses. There is a lot of information about these pieces, but it seems that they were first designed in Denmark, as most of them come from this region and were mainly produced in the 18th and 19th century. Later copies could also come from Germany, Netherlands and England. They were built to hang from the ceiling above the Captain’s cot so that he could see from there if the course was right. Many bear the name of the captain on the compass rose or around the glass and a few also have a small drawing of the ship in gold on the outer glass.
